The culinary highlight here undoubtedly is their celebrated Pork Xiao Long Bao Soup Dumplings, famed for their delicate, perfectly pleated wrappers that envelop an intensely flavorful broth and tender filling. Regulars also rave about the Pork & Shrimp Xiao Long Bao, a delightful variation that harmonizes the sweetness of shrimp with savory pork. If you enjoy a crispy contrast, their Pan Fried Buns offer a golden, lightly charred exterior balanced by a juicy interior.
Beyond dumplings, the menu bursts with savory delights that exemplify authentic regional Chinese flavors: the numbing spice of MA PO Tofu, the bold, aromatic punch of Cumin Beef, and the velvety richness of Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Vegetables. Seafood lovers will appreciate dishes like the Chongqing Style Fried Shrimp — fiery with a perfect crunch — or the subtle complexity of Basil Fish Fillet. For noodle enthusiasts, the Dan Dan Noodles and Beef Chow Fun bring robust, comforting tastes that leave a lingering warmth.
Customer reviews echo a consistent appreciation for the generous portion sizes and the overall flavor profiles. Michael Lui’s experience highlights the welcoming service and the irresistible nature of their pork and shrimp soup dumplings. Xiaoxuan Wang’s reflection on the slightly firm wrappers reveals an honest texture that some might find texturally distinctive, liked or not, but undeniably authentic. Maria Thi Mai’s praise underscores the restaurant’s role in revitalizing Portland’s Old Town dining scene, commending the vibrant, fresh vegetables and crisp textures that brighten each plate.
While some guests, like Glenda A, have noted a quieter, low-key service vibe, particularly with limited staff interaction, this subtlety in ambience creates a relaxed dining experience focused foremost on the flavors and the food’s integrity. It invites diners to truly immerse themselves in the culinary journey.
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning devotee eager to explore more dishes, Xin Ding Dumpling House stands out as a must-visit destination for anyone seeking deeply satisfying, expertly prepared Chinese fare. The balance of subtle textures and bold spices makes every bite a moment to savor, reflecting the rich heritage and evolving palate of Portland’s downtown food scene.
Came here for a post dinner snack - I wasn't hungry but I was in the area and heard about this place so I had to try it. I was immediately seated and the waiter recommended the pork and shrimp soup dumplings, which I ordered. They were delicious. I can't wait to come back to try more.
We were craving soup dumplings, and this place definitely hit the spot. My family thought the wrappers could be a bit softer, but I actually really liked them. The prices are reasonable, and the portion sizes are generous.
We got the pork Xiao long bao soup dumplings and the shrimp & pork Xiao long bao. Both were excellent. It’s a fun place to eat with lots of good choices. We’re looking forward to going back and trying more dishes.
Thankfully, this restaurant is helping to revive Portland's old town. The no-nonsense decor lets the dishes speak for themselves. Brightly steamed broccoli, steaming dumplings, and crispy chicken add ambiance. They have a wide selection of beers on tap along with a full bar. Between the two of us we had the chow fun noodles, eggplant and green beans, and green onion pancake. This left us dinner for two more nights.
The establishment seems very lowkey. The bartender was our waitress but unfortunately did not check in us often. Also the other employees who delivered our food and refilled our waters were a bit standoffish. I needed sauce but since they practically ran off as soon as the fish left their hands. Unfortunately they were also not able to put Thursday Night Football on their tv and had to watch it on my phone. No big deal since it’s not a sports bar per se but still. The food was good. We got shrimp and pork dumplings, braised beef soup, combination fried rice, and fried fish. Would come back for dumplings only. Overall good.
